BASEBALL: Griffins fall to Fountain Valley,
and out of first place
Five days after pulling off a miraculous comeback,
the Los Al Griffins baseball team had no more tricks up its sleeve
and fell
to Fountain Valley 3-2 in a key Sunset League baseball matchup
at FV Wednesday afternoon.
Matt Avery had a 2-run home run for Los Al to tie the game in
the top of the sixth inning but the Barons rallied for the game-winning
run in the bottom of the frame, and take over sole possession
of first place with a 5-1 record. Los Al drops to 4-2, but can
tie the Barons when they take them on at home on Friday
The Griffins are currently ranked No. 1 in
the CIF
Southern Section Division I polls and at No.
16 in the national high school baseball rankings.

BASEBALL: Garrett leads Los Al to 4-1 "walk
off" win over Esperanza
The Griffins improved its first round Sunset
League record to 4-1 after rallying to score three runs in the
bottom of the seventh to escape
with a 6-5 win over Esperanza last Friday. Senior pitcher/outfielder
Travis Garrett scored the winning run after drawing a walk with
the bases loaded. . The two-out walk, which came after he fouled
off a pair of two strike pitches, capped a day which saw Garrett
reach base five times on no hits, three walks and being hit by
two pitches.

Griffins stay atop OC Register Baseball poll,
split pair with LB Poly; open season with home game against FV
this Friday
Los Al Griffins baseball team which won the
Loara championship and has a 5-0 record going into Monday's double-header
with LB Poly, stayed atop that sport's poll
of county coaches, and even got coach Mark Clabough excited
by his team's performance.
The Griffins suffered their first loss of the
season on MKonday when they split a doubleheader with Long Beach
Poly at Blair Field in Long Beach. The Griffins won the afternoon
game 4-1, but lost the evening match 8-5.
Los Al opens its Sunset League season on Friday
with a home game against Fountain Valley.

BASEBALL: Los Al downs Vista Murrietta 7-0,
wins Loara Tourney championship
Matt
Avery singled, doubled and drove in a pair of runs, while Travis
Garrett allowed just one hit in four innings and struck out nine
batters, as the Los Al baseball team downed Vista Murrietta High
School 7-0 to win the Loara Baseball Tournament championship.
Avery (below, left). who had eight hits throughout
the week, was named the Tournament's Co-Most
Valuable Player, as the Griffins, the No. 1 team in Orange
County, improved their record to 5-0.
Los
Al got two runs in the second inning, thanks to a triple by Brian
Tripp and a double by Ken Uyetake, then broke it open with five
in the third.
Garrett was named the Player of the Game. Kyle
Simon, who came in for Garrett in the fifth inning, received a
save.
The Griffins will play a double header against
Long Beach Poly on Monday at Blair Field, and then begin their
15-game Sunset League schedule on Friday with a home game against
Fountain Valley.

BASEBALL: Griffins
hold on to down Marina, advance to Loara championship
It was a rough final inning, but relief pitcher
Lance Breedlove came to the rescue and helped Los Al downSunset
League rival Marina 7-4 and allow the Griffins to advance to Saturday's
championship game of the Loara Baseball Tournanment.
Los Al scored four runs in the fifth inning
to take what seemed an a commanding lead, bu tafter Marina loaded
the bases in the seventh, the game was anything but over until
Bredlove came in struck out Marina's Ryan Olson looking with a
breaking ball.
Los Alamitos (4-0), the No. 1 team in the county
preseason poll, lost in the Loara semifinals last season before
going on to win the Sunset League. The Griffins defeated Marina
all three times in league play, each game by one run.

BASEBALL: Los Al downs Cypress 11-5, advances
to face Marina in Loara Tournament semi-final
The Los Al Griffins baseball team, ranked
No. 1 in Orange County, did nothing to hurt their reputation
by downing Cypress 11-5 in a third round quarterfinal Loara
Tournament match-up Tuesday evening at Glover Stadium in Anaheim.
The Griffins, who improved their non-league
record to 3-0, will next play Marina in Thursday's semi-final
match-up. Game time is 3pm at Glover
Stadium.

BASEBALL: Griffins at top of first OC Register
poll
The
Los Alamitos Griffins, who are already off to a 2-0 start in
non-league play, now have a bigger target on their back after
being ranked No.l 1 in Orange County in the first OC register
poll of the young baseball season.
The Register notes that "The Griffins
return several top players from last year's team that went 22-6
and was a Sunset League champion. Senior utility player Travis
Garrett hit .425 with six home runs and 31 RBIs in 2007, and
had a 4-2 record on the mound. Senior pitcher Kyle Simon (left),
who signed with Arizona, was 7-2 with a 2.72 ERA. Junior pitcher
Beau Wright went 6-0 in '07. Senior outfielder Matt Avery batted
.354 with 22 RBIs, and senior infielder Brian Tripp was 13 for
14 on stolen-base attempts."

BASEBALL: Griffins ranked No. 3 in CIF pre-season
poll
The Los Al Griffins baseball team, ranked
No. 3 in the CIF Division I coaches poll which was released
last week, will open the non-league portion of its season this
Friday against Woodbridge in the first round of the Loara Tournament.
The Griffins return a slew of all leaguers,
including Arizona-bound pitcher Kyle Simon, and UC Irvine -bound
Beau Wright, and returning all-leaguers Travis Garrett, Brian
Tripp, Matt Avery and Kirk Singer.
If Los Al beats Woodbridge, theyn would play
the winner of the Millikan-Sonora match on the following Saturday.
If they lose they would play the loser of the same game.
