Some from team will be chosen to join pros on 2012 Olympic team
Former Los Al Griffin volleyball star Emily Hartong (LAHS 2010) was selected to the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball team Elite 20 roster after surviving tryouts with over 200 top level college players earlier this month.

Hartong, who earned third team All-America honors at the University of Hawaii this past Fall, was invited to take part in tryouts which were held Feb. 10-12, 2012, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Although Hartong played middle blocker for most of her career and for Hawaii this past season, her coach Dave Shoji submitted her as an outside hitter where she went up against 55 others at the same position.
Overall, among the 207 tryout participants representing 73 different colleges, were 55 outside hitters, 49 middle blockers, 44 liberos, 37 setters and 22 opposites..
According to Emily’s dad Bill, she said she “was just honored to be there but that she also had the greatest tryout of her life.”
After making the team, National team coach Hugh McCutcheon told the girls, you are now on the radar for making the Olympic team, but only a few roster spots will be open after all the pro volleyball players come back to rejoin the national squad.
Hartong will soon start playing for Hawaii’s spring sand volleyball team.
